Can you beat someone who never makes mistakes at tic-tac-toe? No. The game is fully solved: if both sides play perfectly, every match ends in a draw. That means the whole game is about making your opponent slip. The first move matters more than it looks: the center is the strongest square, but a corner sets a trap. After a corner opening, there’s only one safe response, and people often miss it.

Corners are more dangerous than the center

Out of the nine squares, the center belongs to four winning lines, a corner to three, and an edge square to only two. On paper, the center is clearly best. But you’re not playing a machine — you’re playing a person. If you take a corner, your opponent has exactly one saving move: the center, and any other move loses. If you take the center, they already have several safe replies. Classic Tic Tac Toe gives you the clean 3x3 board, where you can test this in just a couple of games.

Your move decides your opponent’s board

The expanded version uses nine small boards stitched into one big board. The square you play on in the small board decides which board your opponent must play on next. In other words, every move makes two decisions at once: where to place your mark and where to send the other player. A won small board is locked and counts as one square on the big board. Draws are rare here. The main version of this format is Ultimate Tic Tac Toe.

Matching marks merge together

There’s also a hybrid with merging: the board is larger than usual, and when two identical marks meet, they combine into a higher-tier one. You need to build a line out of those upgraded marks, and you can only reach them through a chain of merges. Classic tactics don’t really help here: grabbing the center is pointless until you have something to merge, and an open square next to a pair becomes more valuable. That’s how Tic Tac Toe Merge works.

The bot never slips, and that changes the goal

Since the game is solved, the algorithm doesn’t need to be smart — it just needs not to make mistakes. So in the versions against the computer, the best you can do is a draw, and the goal changes: not to win, but not to lose. The skill is different too — instead of hunting for attacks, you check every move to make sure you haven’t left a line open for your opponent. That’s the kind of mode Tic Tac Toe Arcade gives you.
