Between waves, there’s a pause, and that’s usually where the outcome is decided: can you finish your defense in time where the next wave will cut it close? This section has classic path-based tower defense, fortress sieges, fantasy kingdom defense, and hybrids with tower merging.
Games Tower Defense
The core rule of the genre is simple: a tower only hits within its own range. Everything else follows from that. On a straight stretch of path, an enemy moves fast, and the tower only gets off two or three shots. Around a turn, it stays in range longer and takes more fire, and if there are several turns in a row, one tower placed in the center can cover multiple sections of the route at once. That’s why experienced players look at the shape of the path first and only then decide what to build.
Slowing towers count as damage
Towers that don’t attack at all and only slow enemies down can look like a waste of money to beginners. In practice, they multiply everything else: while an enemy moves through a slow zone at half speed, every nearby tower gets twice as many shots off. One slowing tower next to three attackers does more than a fourth attacker would. Keeper of the Grove 3 is built around combos like that.
Flying enemies go straight for it
In almost every game in this section, air units show up sooner or later. There’s no path for them — they fly in a straight line from the entrance to the target, skipping the entire ground defense line. So the rule is: some towers shouldn’t go along the path at all, but on the direct line between the entry point and whatever you’re defending. Tower Defenders introduces air units pretty early, so you have to adapt on the fly.
The break between waves matters more than the wave itself
Waves come with pauses in between, and that’s when you get money for the enemies you’ve killed. It’s tempting to spend it right away on a new tower. More often, it’s better to upgrade what you already have: a leveled-up tower usually also gets more range, which means it can reach a nearby section of the path that used to be empty. A new tower doesn’t give anyone extra range. Canyon Defense uses tight maps where you can see that difference from the first waves.
Merge instead of build
Some games in the section replaced building with merging: two identical towers are combined into one stronger unit. That means you have to plan differently — space on the map becomes a resource, and keeping free tiles for future merges matters more than filling everything in right away. Merge Archer Defense works this way. And if you want defense without towers at all — walls, squads, melee combat — check the neighboring Defense section.
