Stage layouts, boosts, and the timer pressure
Each level brings a different layout with platforms and ladders, which makes vertical shots more useful than they first look. The dropped boosts — time slow, shields, double harpoons, and extra seconds — can rescue a run if you grab them before the field gets crowded.
